Frequently Asked Questions
What events are in the USMC PFT?
The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test has three events: (1) Upper body — pull-ups or push-ups; (2) Core strength — plank pose; (3) Cardiovascular — 3-mile run or 5,000m row (for eligible Marines). Maximum total score is 300 points (or 270 if you choose push-ups).
What is the minimum passing score for the USMC PFT?
Marines must score a minimum of 150 total points with at least 40 points on each individual event. Scoring below 40 on any single event is an automatic failure regardless of total points. A score of 235+ earns 1st Class; 200–234 earns 2nd Class; 150–199 earns 3rd Class.
Can I choose push-ups instead of pull-ups?
Yes. Per MCO 6100.13A, Marines may choose push-ups as an alternative. However, push-ups are capped at 70 points maximum, making the total PFT maximum 270 (not 300). This can impact eligibility for special distinctions that require 285+ points.
What are the 2026 Combat Arms standards?
Effective January 1, 2026, Marines in combat arms MOSs (infantry, artillery, reconnaissance, and similar billets) must score at least 210 points using male, age-normed scoring standards — regardless of gender. General PFT scoring remains age- and gender-normed for all other Marines. Always verify with your command.
Who can substitute the 5,000m row for the 3-mile run?
Marines aged 46 and older may substitute the 5,000m row on a Concept 2 ergometer (PM3 or later) without CO approval. Marines under 46 may use the row only with an HCP recommendation and Commanding Officer approval. The row is scored using the same points scale as the run for their age and gender group.
How often do Marines take the PFT?
All active duty and reserve Marines are required to complete the PFT once per year, administered between January 1 and June 30. The Combat Fitness Test (CFT) is conducted July 1 through December 31. Both tests run semi-annually for some units.
What are the special distinctions for high scorers?
Marines scoring 235+ on both PFT and CFT are eligible for Force Fitness Instructor (FFI) consideration. Scoring 285+ on both tests may qualify a Marine for exemption from USMC Height/Weight standards per MCO 6100.13A. A perfect score is 300 points.
How to Improve Your USMC PFT Score
Whether you're aiming to pass for the first time or pushing for a perfect 300, improving your PFT score comes down to targeted training for each of the three events. Here's what works.
1-Pull Up Improvement
Pull-ups are the highest-value event — worth up to 100 points. Even adding 2–3 reps can significantly boost your score. Effective strategies include:
- Grease the groove — do multiple low-rep sets throughout the day rather than training to failure
- Negatives — slow controlled descents build the pulling muscles fast
- Dead hang practice — improving grip strength and shoulder stability directly transfers to pull-up reps
- Frequency over volume — pull-ups 4–5 days per week outperforms 1–2 heavy sessions
2-Plank Improvement
The plank is the easiest event to max with focused training. At 3:45, you earn the full 100 points regardless of age or gender. To get there:
- Daily practice — hold to near-failure once per day, then rest
- Accumulate time — multiple shorter sets (e.g. 3 × 90 seconds) build endurance fast
- Brace correctly — squeeze glutes, quads, and core simultaneously for maximum stability
- Progress weekly — add 10–15 seconds per week until you surpass the 3:45 mark
3-Mile Run Improvement
The run is where most Marines lose the most points. Structured running builds speed faster than random mileage:
- Tempo runs — run at your goal pace for 20–30 minutes twice per week
- Interval training — 400m or 800m repeats at faster than goal pace
- Easy miles — 2–3 easy runs per week build aerobic base without burnout
- Race simulation — do a full 3-mile time trial monthly to track progress
USMC PFT Scoring Explained — MCO 6100.13A
The Marine Corps PFT uses a linear interpolation scoring system. Between the minimum threshold (40 points) and maximum threshold (100 points) for each event, points are distributed evenly based on performance. Here's how classifications break down:
| Classification | Score Range | Fitness Report | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Class | 235 – 300 | Outstanding | FFI eligible at 235+ |
| 2nd Class | 200 – 234 | Satisfactory | Meets standard |
| 3rd Class | 150 – 199 | Below Average | Minimum passing |
| FAIL | Below 150 or any event below 40 | Adverse Report | Any event below 40 = auto fail |
Special Distinctions
- 285+ points — eligible for Height/Weight exemption per MCO 6100.13A
- 235+ on both PFT and CFT — eligible for Force Fitness Instructor (FFI) consideration
- 300 points — perfect score; maximum possible on pull-ups, plank, and run
- 270 points — maximum possible if push-ups are chosen instead of pull-ups
2026 Combat Arms Standard
Effective January 1, 2026, all Marines in combat arms MOSs — including infantry (0300), artillery (0800), reconnaissance (0200), and similar billets — must achieve a minimum of 210 points scored against male, age-normed standards, regardless of gender. This is the sex-neutral fitness floor introduced under updated MCO 6100.13A guidance.
