How to Improve Your USAF PFRA Score — Air Force PT Test Tips
The 2026 PFRA puts 50% of your score on the cardio event — making the 2-mile run or HAMR shuttle the single most impactful area to improve. Use this Air Force PT test calculator to identify your weakest component and focus your training accordingly.
Cardio — 2-Mile Run or HAMR
Since cardio is worth 50 points, even a modest improvement here has the highest return on investment. For the 2-mile run, tempo runs at goal pace twice a week combined with interval repeats will improve your time faster than easy mileage alone. For the HAMR, interval training that mimics the shuttle format — short sprints with brief recoveries — builds the specific fitness the beep test demands.
Strength — Push-Ups
Worth 15 points, push-ups respond quickly to frequent low-rep practice. Multiple sets throughout the day — well below failure — builds density and rep count faster than single exhausting sessions. Hand-release push-ups use a 2-minute window and demand full range of motion on every rep, so practice the exact movement standard.
Core — Sit-Ups, Crunches, or Plank
Also worth 15 points. The plank is often the most accessible to max — especially for older age groups where the required hold time decreases. Build plank endurance with daily practice, adding 10–15 seconds per week. For sit-ups and crunches, pacing matters — going out too fast leads to form breakdown and wasted reps.
Body Composition — WHtR
Worth 20 points and measured independently. A WHtR of 0.49 or below earns the full 20 points. Waist reduction through consistent training and nutrition is the most reliable path. Since this component is measured up to 5 days before the physical events, do not measure immediately after a large meal or late in the day.
